Art in the ‘burbs

Vibrant public art programs will enliven the landscape of both Clive and West Des Moines this summer:

  • The city of Clive has chosen works by the following artists for this year’s Art Along the Trail exhibit on the Greenbelt Trail: James Bearden, Sue Berkey, John Brommel, Hilde DeBruyne, Mac Hornecker and Anna Modeland. Each artist has received a $1,000 stipend, and when the display ends on Labor Day, the city will purchase one work for its public art collection. The exhibit will be dedicated at 5:30 p.m. May 21 at Wildwood Park, 15166 Wildwood Drive in Clive.
  • The city of West Des Moines and the West Des Moines Public Arts Commission are launching a new public art exhibit. Art on the Campus, which the city plans to make an annual event, will feature up to 12 sculptures by local artists.  The works will be displayed from July 1 to Sept. 30 around the pond near the city’s government buildings. Artists selected will receive a $1,000 stipend and also will have the chance to sell the work displayed. If someone buys a sculpture, 15 percent of the sales price will go to the West Des Moines Public Arts Commission to help fund future exhibits. For more information, call 222-3444.
