‘Toga! Toga! Toga!’

When is the last time you’ve been to a toga party?! I must confess, “toga party” conjured up images of drunken frat boys and John Belushi chanting, “Toga! Toga! Toga!” However, when I received my “Imperial Invitation” to this Toga Party hosted by Jessica and Tommy Ghrist, Amy Edson, and Nick Van Patten held at Salisbury House & Gardens, I knew it would be nothing like that famous scene from “Animal House.” This was a wonderful, more elaborate, Julius Caesar type of toga affair. The crasty (crappy nasty) weather kept us from enjoying Salisbury House’s gardens but, of course, staging an affair in this beautiful mansion/museum pretty much guarantees a fine party ala ancient Greece. Everyone was dressed in their Greek best high-thread-count sheets with ivy plants climbing around their brow, and there were a few Egyptians and goddesses thrown in the mix (except for my husband, who went all out and wore a gold Caesar’s Palace medal over a black shirt).

We enjoyed Becky Smith’s fantastic eats and treats and did our bacchanalian best to eat, drink and be merry! There were not many wild and crazy frat house antics, though. Does that mean that we could we be maturing? Highly doubtful. We did not need Otis Day and the Knights to get the crowd pumped up to chant “Toga! Toga! Toga!” while the DJ played music and sheets flapped in the breeze. Indeed, it was a Toga Party that would make Bluto and the rest of the Deltas jealous. Check out the photos by clicking here.
