Get Jazzed

The “Jazz at Caspe Terrace” series kicks off Sept. 17 with the Dave Burrell Conception. Pianist Dave Burrell, drummer Joe Chonto and saxophonist Dave Tamura play modern jazz with a serious nod to the form’s blues and gospel roots, melding traditional and avant-garde styles. Listen to Burrell’s version of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” here. Two more shows round out the series:

• Nov. 5: Lee Shaw Celebrates the Music of Billy Strayhorn. Shaw, an 87-year-old pianist considered one of the jazz greats, performs works from one of Duke Ellington’s favorite composerarrangers.

• Dec. 5: The Dave Douglas Quintet. Some of the best musicians in the business join Douglas, voted top trumpeter in DownBeat magazine’s critics poll for more than 10 years, as he celebrates his 50th year with performances in all 50 states.

The concerts, which start at 7:30 p.m., are held at Caspe Terrace in Waukee. Stick around afterward for the Waukee Area Arts Council’s meet-the-artists dessert reception. Advance tickets are $25 for the Burrell and Shaw shows, and $30 for Douglas. (Student prices are available.) You also can buy series tickets for $75 and be entered into a drawing for an autographed CD from each performer. To reserve tickets, contact Abe Goldstien at abe@trilixgroup.com or 515279-6452.
