Ghostly Galas

Join in the fun at  upcoming frightful frolics–and help raise money for two cultural venues in the process.

Hollywood Halloween, the Des Moines Community Playhouse’s signature fundraising event and costume party, will be Oct. 25, 7:30–10:30 p.m., at West End Architectural Salvage, 22 Ninth St. downtown. The spook-tacular soiree, celebrating its 11th year, includes dancing to Final Mix, food from Mary Miller Catering and a silent auction. Last year’s affair raised more than $46,000 for children’s theater and education programs. Tickets are $100 ($60 for young professionals), $25 for a VIP pre-party, and $1,000 for patron sponsorships (including VIP pre-party). Click here to buy.

Terrace Hill is the governor’s official residence, a national historic landmark and a stately example of Second Empire architecture. But for Halloween, it transforms into Scare-Us-Hill. Join the frightful frolic Oct. 31, 6-10 p.m. Guys and “ghouls” can dance to classic rock by Opus Taylor, graze on heavy hors d’oeuvres and sip signature Templeton Rye cocktails. A live auction will feature three packages, including a wine tasting for 10 with Gov. Terry Branstad and first lady Chris Branstad. (The entire Branstad clan dressed as Star Wars characters at last year’s Scare-Us debut. Sources were mum about plans for this year’s ensembles.) Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be awarded in five categories.

The Terrace Hill Society Foundation sponsors the not-so-frightful fete, with proceeds going toward restoration and preservation of the 1869 mansion. Tickets: $75 per person, including valet parking ($40 for those under 40; 10 percent discount for members). Contact Terrace Hill Office Manager Diane Becker at  242-6317 or
