The 2013 Principal Charity Classic will donate a record $1,032,500 to local nonprofits that benefit children. The funds will be distributed to five “FORE Our Kids” charities, as well as to 106 Birdies for Charity organizations. This is the first time the golf tournament’s donations have topped the $1 million mark, bringing the seven-year total for charitable donations to more than $5 million. Other recent successes in the nonprofit community:

More than 250 people celebrated local refugee farmers and community agriculture at Lutheran Services in Iowa’s (LSI) Empower luncheon Sept. 18. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey was the special guest speaker. LSI’s urban agriculture program for refugee growers has helped 150 local families connect with plots of land. Celebrity Servers Night Sept. 23 raised more than $61,000 for the Young Women’s Resource Center. Thirty-one local celebrities joined with experienced wait staff to serve 530 diners at Centro and Django restaurants.

About 200 volunteers teamed up with Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines on Oct. 3 to repair homes, install playground equipment and spruce up the Bellizzi MacRae American Legion Hall in Des Moines’ Columbus Park neighborhood. The effort was part of Meredith Corp.’s 12th Annual Fall Workday.
