Ankeny is home to the new Fong’s Pizzeria. The venue is an offshoot of the downtown Des Moines Fong’s, located on Fourth Street and famous for its Asia-meets-Italy hybrids, including the Mu-Shu pork, Fongolian beef and Kung-Pao chicken pizzas.
What’s new in Ankeny? Spaciousness galore. The behemoth hot spot, which opened April 28, offers 6,400 square feet, compared with 1,600 square feet at the Fourth Street location. Of course, part of the charm of the original Fong’s is its dive-bar snugness and old-time character (when it opened in 2009, it took over the space of a down-at-the-heels Chinese restaurant that had been around for almost 100 years). Still, those who may have been turned off, on occasion, by the Court Avenue all-in party-crowd atmosphere at the Fourth Street Fong’s might appreciate the sleek, squeaky-clean feel–with plenty of room to move–of the new spot.
Or, maybe the party will simply move to Ankeny; after all, the bar serves 88 beers on tap, compared with eight in the Des Moines location. The new venue also has added a craft-cocktail angle to Fong’s Tiki drinks: They’ll now be made with fresh-squeezed juices.
Fong’s in Ankeny is at 1415 SW Vintage Parkway, Suite 120; 243-8888. Find out more at fongspizza.com.
