A spectacle of the fall season returns Saturday, Sept. 24, with the Head of the Des Moines Regatta. Hosted by the Des Moines Rowing Club, the regatta features a daylong series of racing shells from clubs and colleges rowing 3.2 miles from the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden to Prospect Park.

Get in on the action anytime from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The rowing club offers these suggestions of viewing sites and this guide for new spectators. You’ll find race schedule details here. Over the regatta’s 34-year history, crews have come from all surrounding states, and from as far as Harvard, Radcliff, and even overseas.
