Meet Lauren Hickman, Health consultant and writer

How you would describe your style: Functional. Practical. Ecological. Classic. I thrift most items because it’s cost-effective, good for the environment and a pleasant consumer experience.

The piece of clothing or accessory you couldn’t live without:
My 24-karat gold drop earrings that I never take out. Gold suits my color tone and character better than silver—in alchemy, gold is a metaphor for the transformational process of the spirit. Also, scarves: You’ll rarely see me without a wrap around my neck.

Where do you shop?
I shop locally at Worn, sometimes Consign by Design, and I have a crush on Preservation and Dornink, but mostly I thrift when I’m out of town, like in Chicago or Brooklyn.

The part of your style you’re known for: My hair has been a mega source of expression through the years. I’ve dyed it, bleached it, shaved it. I’ve dreadlocked it, spiked it, grown it long—and finally let it do its thing. I’m channeling a bit of [South African vocalist and actress] Yolandi Visser right now with the micro bangs. If I could rock the full-on harsh alien look, I would. But that’s a lot of upkeep. Plus, I’m pretty softhearted.

Your fashion philosophy?
Create a uniform and build from that. Have a standby. I wear the same pants three days in a row, hang them up when
I get home, and thank them for helping me look dope that day.
