Celebration of Cultures

We’re delighted that people fleeing starvation, war and oppression find refuge and opportunity here in Central Iowa. You can help celebrate our community’s diverse cultures Saturday, June 10, when Des Moines marks World Refugee Day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Callanan Middle School.

Games and other fun activities will keep kids interested. Enjoy ethnic dancers and exotic foods, and learn about local programs and agencies that assist new arrivals to Iowa. Scheduled speakers include Mayor Frank Cownie and Polk County Supervisor Angela Connolly. Produced by the Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa, the event is free. Questions? Call 515-244-7702 ext. 129.

Upcoming: To advance public understanding of life in a foreign refugee camp, the documentary film “Warehoused” will be shown free at 6:30 p.m. June 20 at Sheslow Auditorium on the campus of Drake University.
