Main Attraction: The 20 Party was thrown to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Des Moines Arts Festival and to toast those who have made DMAF what it is today. Guests enjoyed music, imagery from the past 20 years, interactive activities and more including an art smackdown between Des Moines Art Center director Jeff Fleming and the 2017 DMAF Featured Artist Chris Vance. Each of them had just minutes to create a piece of art using only markers. In the end, the artist who received the most applause by the crowd won (spoiler alert: it was a tie). To cap the evening, the Italian aerial dance team eVenti Verticali performed “WANTED” on next to the Hy-Vee Main Stage in Western Gateway Park.
