It’s hard to find many silver linings on this pandemic cloud, but there is this: When has it ever been easier to get a top caterer in town to make a small-scale meal for your family? Get in while the getting-in is good, people! When this pandemic is finally over, chances are these pros once again will focus on grander gatherings.

Find out what’s cooking for December from these local caterers. Links take you directly to the best place to start your order. Contactless pickup and/or delivery are available in all cases.

Big Momma’s Catering: Check out the drop-down menu on the Facebook page for ready-made options including pot roast, seafood pasta, lasagna, Alfredo pasta, ribs and mac-and-cheese. You can also email or call for special requests (see contact info on Facebook page). “Although we have no current plans to add to our current menu, customers are able to customize their orders based upon their preferences at any time,” says owner Andrea Reddick. Learn more about Big Momma’s Catering in this story by Karla Walsh.

Catering by Cyd: Named Best Caterer in Business Record’s Best of Des Moines 2020 survey, caterer Cyd Koehn is offering a spate full-menu meal bundles. Go global with an Italian, German, French or Mediterranean menu; go festive with the Home for the Holidays menu; keep it Iowa- inspired with the Family Food Feast starring Hickory Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin; also find gift bundles, like the Christmas Treat Basket and Cyd’s Cold-Care Package. There’s much more—in fact, perusing her list of offerings is great fun in itself. Koehn says she’ll be adding healthy weekly meal-prep menus and a special birthday celebration menu in December.

Tangerine Food Co.: A combination of fresh and freezer options lets you pick something up for tonight and for a future night, too. The freezer selections (such as meatloaf, soups and baked pasta) will stay mostly static, while some weekly specials (such as shepherd’s pie, stuffed peppers, braised beef with polenta, fudge, toffee, cookies and cakes) will rotate in and out. Owner Susan Madorsky also mentioned, “We are first, last and always a custom catering company. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for whatever you would like to eat.”

Taste! To Go: Look for a rotating selection of heat-and-serve meals that serve four to six (e.g., Shanghai Noodles or Asian Chicken Meatball Meal) as well as numerous soup options—from a gourmet wild mushroom to a good-for-what-ails-you chicken soup. Appetizer boxes—such as the Nordic salmon box or the cheese box—are great for gift-giving or holiday-time snacking. Complete the package with a bottle of something good. “We have started to expand our pairings,” says associate Chris Williams. “For example, our Nordic salmon box will pair well with aquavit or sauvignon blanc, and those items can be added when ordering.”
