Where to Find Locally Grown Produce This Winter

Writer: Karla Walsh

Given Greater Des Moines’ abundance of local farmers markets, it’s easy to snag fresh produce during the summer. When the seasons change and the temperatures dip, you can still find fruits and vegetables grown close to home at these local spots.

Iowa Food Co-op

Invest $50 in a membership and stock up on seasonal produce, locally raised meats, baked goods, prepared foods and more. Check out the current options at shop.iowafood.coop. The virtual store is perfect for those with dietary restrictions or who value preferences, as you can sort by a wide variety of categories, including certified fair trade, free-range, naturally grown or vegan. Once you’ve filled your virtual cart, swing by the shop (4944 Franklin Ave., Suite G) to pick up your order on Friday from noon to 7 p.m. or Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also opt for delivery.

Dogpatch Urban Gardens FarmStand

You may have seen Dogpatch at the Downtown Farmers’ Market or perhaps snacked on their greens at one of their many partner restaurants. But you can stock up on fresh produce grown on the Dogpatch property right from the source at their four-season FarmStand (5085 Meredith Drive). In addition to their signature greens, beets and carrots, you can also score dips, dressings, prepared salads and snacks made on-site, as well as local breads, salsas, dairy products, honey and more. The selection changes each week, so visit dogpatchurbangardens.com/store for the current options and to preorder.

Des Moines Downtown Winter Farmers’ and Makers’ Market

Like a slightly smaller, cozier cousin of the bustling summer market, the winter version is back indoors after hosting an outdoor drive-through event last year. Mark your calendar for Nov. 19-20 to stock up on Thanksgiving fixings, then again Dec. 10-11 to score holiday gifts from any of the approximately 150 vendors. Location and times can be found at dsmpartnership.com/desmoinesfarmersmarket/winter-market.
