Tired of chasing trends? Keeping up with the latest? Trend-proof your home by designing a space grounded in always-in-style classics. One of our favorite classics is the color white.
One of the best ways to keep your home fresh and up to date is to make friends with the color white. But understand, this friend has many faces and many personalities … and may never want to leave.
“I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite color,” says Julie Ross, Co-owner of K. Renee Home. “I would say it’s a color that supports our desire for change and updating things. It’s classic.”
Truth be told, white isn’t just a single color. It’s actually part of a very large family. According to HGTV.com, there are more than 600 shades of white among the major paint companies. So choosing the “right one” may sound daunting. But the interior designers at K. Renee are well-versed in the world of white. And they are more than happy to help.
Whether selecting a paint color, a fabric for a foundational upholstered piece, or a hue for timeless built-in cabinets, the K. Renee professionals have the skills and the showroom filled with just what you need to build or complement your style.
“White has it all. Its beauty is absolute. It’s the perfect harmony.” -Coco Chanel
“White is and always will be in style,” says Ross. “But there’s an education to using white.”
Depending on lighting, surroundings, and the color’s undertones, white can appear either cool or warm. And it can change from room to room. But the best white — no matter the hue — has the ability to outlast trends when combined with the right furnishings and fabrics.
“That is really the long-term view,” says Ross. “And many times, I think, people use color as a way to bring life to their home. But the real reason they don’t have life in their homes is because they haven’t layered [white] with textures and variations and interesting elements.”
Ross recommends using a soft shade of white on home features that may be difficult or expensive to change in the future — think cabinets, built-ins, doors, trim and walls. Also consider dressing larger foundational furnishings, such as a sectional and sofa, in white or a similar light, neutral hue. Performance fabrics from companies such as Sunbrella and Crypton make it possible. Durable and easy to clean, they’re ideal for families with kids and pets, no matter the color.
To complement a home founded in white, add wood tones in floors and furniture, mixed metals in fixtures and lighting, and texture in stone, tile, and surfaces. Ross even encourages clients to add pops of color, if that’s what they love. Rugs, pillows, art and accessories are ideal places for color or home-décor trends.
“[Put color] on something that you don’t feel bad about changing up after the new hottest trend [ends],” she says. “Or when you all of a sudden decide you want to do something different.”
With so many products designed to handle everyday wear and tear, there’s not much stopping you from giving white a try. So invite it into your home. You may just find you never want White to leave.
“White is such a classic,” says Ross. “It’s never going to go out of style.”
