Historic Renovation or Restoration (50 years or older)
In with the old

Gold: ALT Design Studio/Invest DSM/ Sequel Architecture
It was a challenge to maintain the historic personality of this 1896 Victorian Gothic home in the Drake neighborhood while revamping its interior and exterior and transforming it from a five-unit apartment to a single-family home. But with help from Invest DSM and Sequel Architecture, designers at ALT Design Studio preserved original details, including the staircase and fireplace, and added stained glass lighting and brass fixtures to reflect the Victorian era. “The character was stunning, so we reclaimed what we could and matched all the new to the old with extreme attention to detail,” according to designers Jessica Lemmo and Holly DeGoey. Remodeled Kitchen
Wood you rather

Gold: Dwell Home Furnishings & Interior Design
A kitchen remodel gave this Cedar Rapids home a modern update while maintaining its wood ceiling from the 1980s. The new black aesthetic throughout the house, especially the granite kitchen island, contrasts with the wood for a modern urban feel. Interior designer Alex Von Ahsen combined the home’s original kitchen and dining into one large workable space that’s perfect for entertaining, with a 10-seat dining table and six-seat lounge area. Remodeled Living Room
Space station

Gold: Zenith Design + Build
This living room got a bright new look with a new hardwood floor, a fresh coat of paint and wooden beams. Designers replaced the octagonal fireplace with a modern two-sided version that separates the space while still feeling cohesive. Unique, see-through shelving was also installed between the living and dining rooms. “This shelving offers practical storage and display space while allowing light and sightlines to flow freely between the two areas,” project superintendent Mike Johnston said. Remodeled Bath
Turn up the tile style

Gold: Zenith Design + Build
Instead of two bathrooms separated by a clunky dividing wall, there is now one large, cohesive bathroom for this Saylorville home. “The area was transformed into a generously sized retreat,” project superintendent Mike Johnston said. Along with knocking out the barrier wall, the designers replaced outdated tile and wood with modern, hexagonal floor tiles and vibrant green tiles for the bathtub accent. Playful wallpaper gives the bathroom an extra boost of personality. Photographer: Golden Photos DSM
