L-R: Tom Boesen, Tim Boesen, Ben Boesen, Frank Boesen

Q: How did you get started in your career?
A: Tom Boesen: Boesen the Florist opened in 1923 on Beaver Avenue. One hundred years later, it is run by the third generation of our family.

Q: Tell us about yourself.
A: Tom Boesen: I started working at the shop when I was twelve years old. I started full-time in 1972. Over the years, I’ve witnessed many changes to Boesen and changes to the industry. We’ve grown from a small fl ower shop to a Des Moines institution. I hope future generations see the value of Boesen the Florist.

Q: What do you love about your career?
A: Tom Boesen: I love getting to know people. In this line of work, we’re in people’s lives from birth to birthdays to weddings and beyond. We deliver fl owers for the most momentous occasions and every small moments in between. I like being a small part of someone’s journey.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Who inspires you?
A: Tom Boesen: My grandfather always told me to pretend I was on the other side of the counter and to conduct business from that point of view. To this day, I never want to make a penny off an unhappy customer, so we will always do whatever it takes to make it right.
