Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: I am the founder of Above + Beyond Cancer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to elevating the lives of those touched by cancer. I’ve led cancer survivors on inspirational mind-body-spirit pilgrimages to destinations around the world.
Q: How did your organization get started?
A: What started off for me as a career in medicine has become a ministry of healing. Interacting with patients authentically as a person who cares about people has great therapeutic benefit for the patient. It’s also true that this type of doctor-patient relationship is tremendously healing for the physician.
Q: What do you love about your career?
A: I love the opportunity to help people. It is a tremendous honor to be able accompany patients and their families on their journey toward healing.
Q: What are some guiding principles you’ve used in your career?
A: None of us is as good as all of us. Adversity leads to personal growth. Challenge yourself. “Not knowing” can be a source of curiosity and creativity. Live today with passion. If diamonds were as plentiful as grains of sand, they would be worthless. It’s because we don’t live forever that makes today so valuable.
