The Des Moines Metro Opera reopens this weekend with another round of world-class performances in Indianola, Des Moines and Johnston. The 51st season begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday with Bizet’s “Carmen,” in which the title character’s carefree life takes a dangerous turn when she falls simultaneously for a charming military officer and a handsome bullfighter. (Seriously, what could possibly go wrong?)

In “Bluebeard’s Castle,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, a new bride learns a few disturbing secrets about her husband during a tour of his castle. The new production features high-tech 3D digital images designed by the local artist Oyoram, which illustrate the story’s world of treasure and terror. Read all about it in the new issue of dsm.

If you’d like to see any of this year’s shows — including “The Love of Three Oranges,” “dwb (driving while black)” and “The Falling and the Rising” — buy your tickets soon. They often sell out.
