Modern Meets Victorian

On the move

Gold: ALT Design Studio and Invest DSM
A complete remodel helped this Victorian home settle into a new location in the Drake neighborhood, two blocks from where it was built in 1890. Designers Jessica Lemmo and Holly DeGoey restored the property to its former glory as a single-family home by matching modern fixtures to the original millwork with painstaking detail. “Our biggest challenge was keeping continuity throughout the house to give it an updated feel while preserving its character,” noted Jordynn Schaeffer, another designer with the ALT Design Studio team. Other original features such as a solid wood banister and 8-foot pocket doors contrast beautifully with mid-century modern flourishes, like the geometric kitchen backsplash and starburst chandeliers. Remodeled Kitchen

Recipe For Style

Before

Gold: MainBuilt
Before the makeover, this kitchen felt fragmented by awkward half-walls and a separate dining room. So the designers “completely changed the layout and redesigned the aesthetics,” said Katelyn Huber, MainBuilt’s marketing manager. They installed bamboo-colored cabinets to match the floors and futuristic gold light fixtures to soften the sharp angles of the white central island and built-in dining table. Above the new wall of windows sits a recessed hood to accompany the new stainless steel appliances. Plus, glass cabinetry and a full wine fridge seem to expand the modern space even further, while providing visual interest. Photographer: Brooke Pavel Photography

Woodland Wonderland

Before

Gold: JMG Holdings
Designers Jason and Alie Gast wanted to incorporate the natural beauty of this home’s surrounding woods into the bathroom to create a spa-like atmosphere and modernize its most important features. Black and white marble cover the walls of the large shower, replacing dated cream-colored tiles. Two vessel sinks now perch on top of a new mid-century modern-inspired counter, framed by warm recessed track lighting and brilliant gold fixtures. A new egg-shaped bathtub and blue velvet couch encourage lounging and contrast beautifully against the dark tile floors. Photographer: Jason Gast

Remodeled Living Room

Fireplace Flips

Before

Gold (tie): Design2Build
The high ceilings in this living room felt dragged down by dated oak framing and a clunky ’90s layout. The fireplace, previously tucked in an awkward corner, is now the room’s focal point, framed in charcoal Venetian plaster. New double doors separate the home’s foyer from the living room, but the room still feels spacious, thanks to designers Sheila Waller and Sharissa Johnson’s open concept with new windows and a unique glass-walled staircase. A large ring chandelier replaces the recessed lights that had been overpowered by the height of the room, and the old thick carpeting was replaced with a clean white oak finish on the new floors. Southern Charm Goes North

Before

Gold (tie): Eden and Gray Design Build
When this homeowner moved to Urbandale from Atlanta, she wanted to bring some Southern comforts along with her. To help, designer Hannah Shiplett of Eden and Gray Design Build painted the wall-to-wall wood paneling a gleaming white and ripped out the outdated carpeting and slate tile floors, replacing them with espresso-color hardwood. A new fan and white coffered ceilings mimic the high ceilings of traditional Southern homes and maximize light coming in from the two-story entryway. Small details like the navy blue built-in shelving, patterned rug and refreshed brick around the original fireplace add a cozy touch to the all-white space. Photographer: in house
