Traditional Architecture

Classy Colonial

Gold: Curran & Co. Architects
The Colonial Revival house from the 1991 movie “Father of the Bride” inspired the design of this classic yet contemporary home. The façade is built with elegant white bricks, while the interior features an open design. Symmetrical architecture and windows add to the home’s classic feel and let in plenty of natural light. “By blending classic charm with contemporary features, such as open-plan interiors and energy-efficient technologies, we create spaces that honor the past while meeting the needs of the present,” architect J.P. Curran said. Photographer: Curran & Co. Architects

New Construction: Modern

Surrounded by nature

Gold: Curran & Co. Architects
Two types of siding, in light wood and black, combine with darker wood roofing to give this home a balanced feel that meshes with the surrounding trees and horse pasture. The home’s open concept connects the living, dining and kitchen spaces for indoor unity, and large windows provide optimal outdoor viewing that allow natural light to flood inside. A charming guest cottage out back makes this home a top-notch place to host guests. Photographer: Curran & Co. Architects

New Construction: Traditional

Timeless Tudor

Gold: Curran & Co. Architects
This new home reimagines the grandeur of English Tudor style for the 21st century. “The design draws inspiration from the traditional multi-gabled front elevation of Tudor homes, while introducing a contemporary twist,” architect J.P. Curran said. The home features four bedrooms, 4 1/2 bathrooms, and a separate carriage house — sans horses and stable boys — that houses an office and bedroom. Whitewashed brick comprises the home’s base, and a sleek wooden door completes the look. Photographer: Curran & Co. Architects

An era of updates

Gold: Melissa Guerrero Design
Renovation altered every surface of this 1979 home in Moingona, near Boone, but the much-needed updates didn’t erase the original feel. Nearly every room received new flooring, along with repaired windows, plumbing, a subframe and everything in between. Designer Melissa Guerrero made a point to use existing materials wherever possible and focus on the three R’s: “Reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible, especially with vintage projects,” she said. “I enjoy juxtaposing modern features with vintage details and highlighting artwork throughout the interior.” Photographer: Melissa Guerrero
