Dining Room
An old-money aesthetic
Gold: Jeid Studio
When visitors arrive through the main front doors, this dining room is the focal point of the home, so the owners wanted it to be both welcoming and eye-catching. To elevate the space, designers decorated the built-in bookcases with dozens of books curated over two years from estate sales and thrift stores. “We curated medical guides, encyclopedias and vintage children’s books,” Jeid Studio founder Jessi Economos said. In the evenings, LED bookcase lighting and the glimmering chandelier create a cozy ambience for dinner parties by the elegant stone fireplace. Photographer: Austin Day

Living Room: Modern
Haute hygge
Gold: Serenity Homes
By incorporating European elements of design and swapping out intricate moldings for simpler trim on the bookshelves, this living room feels modern without sacrificing charm or functionality. Sleek finishes and soft furniture textures balance each other out. “Thoughtfully merging elements can create a space that honors tradition while accommodating today’s families,” said Holly Baumgartel, the owner and interior designer for Serenity Homes. Living Room: Traditional
Warm and welcoming
Gold: Caliber Homes
The client for this new custom-built home in Waukee requested a neutral color palette that felt contemporary yet traditional and comfortable. The resulting living room pulls in farmhouse-style details with natural textures and a clean design that feels welcoming and open. A great stone fireplace and light wood accents give the impression of a warm lakeside cabin but with all the comforts of an upscale hotel. Photographer: Lauren Konrad Photography

Primary Bedroom
Suite disposition
Gold: Homemakers Furniture
“Primary bedrooms are some of the best rooms to truly express creativity and have fun when it comes to design,” said Sue Espinosa, director of visual display with Homemakers Furniture. To illustrate her point, she said this room’s small elements of flair, like the root sculpture and slatted wood paneling, elevate the space from “bedroom” to “sophisticated suite.” The room’s industrial-style architecture was further softened into a relaxing, organic space using upholstered furniture, layered bedding, curved objects, asymmetrical pieces and unique lighting. A hidden respite
Gold: South of Grand Studio
This home-office transformation prioritized color and storage, with a fold-down Murphy bed to create a multipurpose space. The dark color dazzles against the light from the large windows, all balanced by the walnut stain on the shelving and furnishings. “Built-ins tend to be very linear and squared, so we wanted to select furniture that brought in some curves and softness so the space felt comfortable and calm,” South of Grand Studio owner and designer Taylor Johnson said. Bar or Wine Room
Bespoke bar for ballers
Gold: Jeid Studio
While the children are away, the adults can play in this sophisticated bar space that overlooks the kids’ basketball court below. The rich neutral color palette complements gold accents throughout the bar, and custom cabinets were designed to be functional while showcasing the owner’s lavish bottle collection. White marble keeps the space feeling clean and bright, while the navy tones, walnut finishes and grasscloth wallpaper add warmth and texture. Photographer: Austin Day

Utility Room
Delightful drop zone
Gold: Serenity Homes
The client in this home doesn’t have kids but still wanted a functional mudroom for coats, shoes, bags and keys. A muted color palette and sleek rounded mirror for last-minute outfit checks reflect the grown-up sensibilities, and the overall design is simple to keep the space organized. “Minimalist design promotes a sense of calm by eliminating clutter and focusing on essential elements, which can make spaces feel more open,” said Holly Baumgartel, Serenity Homes owner and interior designer. Basement
Watch-party palace
Gold: Meghan Blum Interiors
An extensive addition expanded the basement space in this Des Moines home, making plenty of room to get creative. “It’s the perfect spot to curl up and watch a football game or have a family movie night,” said Katelyn Huber, marketing manager at Meghan Blum Interiors. The plush couches and organic textures from light wood and stone feel homey, but the open layout keeps things up to date. New rugs, lighting and window treatments pull the space together.
