An underlying purpose drives the design and decor choices made by the interior designers at K. Renee Home in West Des Moines.

It isn’t the hottest style.

It isn’t the latest color.

And it isn’t a particular piece of furniture.

It is a feeling.

“When we’re creating spaces, we want people to be drawn to that room because it’s a place they feel good in,” says co-owner Julie Ross, who joined Kelli Schulz to establish the furnishings side of fashion retailer K. Renee back in 2012. “Our business is built on the concept of bringing joy, peace, comfort, and all the things they encompass. It’s styling a home so it’s serene, comfortable, and a lovely place to be.”

Julie admits she was living with a sense of darkness in her life when she began talking to friends Jeff and Kelli Schulz about the possibility of creating a design store that would allow clients to see, feel, and buy beautiful home furnishings without delay. Frank, Julie’s husband of 17 years, had recently passed away, and portions of her own home seemed to contribute to the intense grief she felt from the loss. She didn’t want that to happen to others.

“I had so much darkness in my life. I needed more light,” says Julie, who also saw a need for luxurious grab-and-go decor in the Des Moines area. “The place that I want to go to be safe is my home. And I want to feel good there.”

According to Julie, too many people live with rooms that impact them negatively. Whether we’re triggered by pieces that evoke sad memories, worn-out family furnishings, or a primary bedroom that’s become a dumping ground for old furniture, each moment disliking a space is a moment of darkness. And it’s completely unnecessary.

“We should be living in beauty in our homes every day,” Julie says. “That’s our safe harbor. I know it’s the place I run to. It’s the place I like to be. And it’s hard to have a home you don’t feel good about. You don’t need to carry that negative energy with you every day.”

Whether a customer is shopping the extensive retail showroom for a single vase, a grand sectional, or an entire house worth of furnishings, the interior designers at K. Renee are there to ensure a positive experience—inside the store and, later, inside the home.

“We have enough darkness in the world right now. We all need a place of light,” says Julie.

I used “decor” without the accent mark throughout per Merriam Webster, but if it’s your style to use the accent mark, please stet.

I left the serial comma (Oxford comma) in throughout. I wasn’t sure if this is your style or if you do AP style.
