Why not warm up with a Dubai Chocolate Latte from the Empire? (Photo: The Empire)
By Hailey Evans
While not quite so frigid as I anticipated when I planned this newsletter story — thanks, climate change — I still think it’s time for a round-up of seasonal drinks. In the name of service-oriented journalism, consider this your emergency kit of hot, trendy beverages to keep you toasty warm in the days ahead, when temps do inevitably drop below freezing.
Dubai Chocolate Latte at the Empire
Espresso, steamed milk, mocha, pistachio, whipped cream
Hop on the Dubai chocolate trend with this sweet variation. It’s available through Nov. 30 at the new spot on Fourth Street.
Honeybee at Scenic Route
Espresso, honey, steamed milk, cinnamon
You can’t go wrong with a caffeinated classic. I like to grab my drink and then sit in the cafe by the wall of windows to work. As daylight hours shrink, I’ll take any chance I get in proximity to the sunlight.
Inkblot at Reading in Public Bookstore + Cafe
Strawberry jasmine tea infused with butterfly pea flower, steamed milk
What’s better than drinking steaming tea surrounded by books on a cold winter day? Next to nothing, if you ask me. Plus, the bright colors of this fruity tea help chase away any winter clouds, metaphorically speaking.
Hot Toddy at Bartender’s Handshake
Old Grand Dad bourbon, lemon, honey, ginger
Sometimes you just need to keep it simple. Whether or not you’ve just come in from the slopes, this drink hits the spot for both coziness and warmth.
Secret Cider at Secret Admirer
Villon Cognac, apple cider, citrus, peach, cinnamon butter
The indoor-outdoor bar is now serving its annual themed menu, “Nice List,” featuring festive drinks to match the halls decked with boughs of holly. Try it through Dec. 30.
Glühwein at the Des Moines Christkindlmarket
Red wine, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, citrus, sugar, vanilla
Technically, you can’t get this drink yet. But one of my favorite winter traditions is the mulled wine at outdoor Christmas markets, so forgive me for being excited. This year’s market at Principal Park will also offer Kinderpunsch (cranberry juice, apple cider, brown sugar, mulling spices) and hot cocoa.
