Q: What do you love most about Greater Des Moines?
A: Sherri Nielsen: I’m always amazed by how generous our Greater Des Moines community is. Our mission at Easterseals simply wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous support we continually receive from individuals and businesses throughout the state. It’s so wonderful to know that our residents understand the impacts that nonprofit organizations have on our community as a whole.

Q: How did you get started in your career?
A: I started at Easterseals Iowa almost 28 years ago as a Direct Support Professional supporting individuals with disabilities to find and maintain community-based employment. I loved the mission immediately and throughout my 28 years here I’ve worked in many areas including direct support, human resources and program oversight. I moved into the President/CEO position in 2008.

Q: What do you love about your career?
A: I love having the opportunity to support our clients and our team members to work toward the goals that they have set for themselves. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a client be successful and the joy that success brings to their whole family.

Q: What are some guiding principles you’ve used in your career?
A: Stick to the values of our organization. Be transparent and honest, always. Taking time for learning and growth opportunities is key to bettering leadership abilities.
