Q: What do you love about your career?
A: I firmly believe if you do something passionately, you will do it better. I get excited when I arrive at the office in the morning and love spending time with clients and colleagues. I have truly found a home with Merchants and look forward to my future in Des Moines and its family atmosphere.
Q: What are some guiding principles you’ve used in your career?
A: Hard work and effort pay off, and having a strong process and good strategy leads to results. Servant leadership not only works, it’s the right way to treat people. What guides me aligns well with the values I see in Des Moines’ residents, and those of my company: integrity, continuous improvement, developing others’ potential, balancing work and life, and having fun together.
Q: Who inspires you?
A: My wife Karen, and two sons, Grant and Aidan. I see how Karen mentors and coaches employees that she works with, and it inspires me to be better. I am also inspired by what great adults our sons have become. It keeps me young to see their views on the world.
Q: What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
A: I was a ranch hand in Montana. Cowboys are rougher and tougher in person than they are in the movies. I love the West and the outdoors, but I am happy to visit a ranch rather than work on one.
