More is more

“Creating multiple functioning spaces throughout the backyard is crucial for enjoyment,” said Stone Cross owner Brad Puckett, who designed this project. This backyard was customized for a new home and includes a 1,000-square-foot pool, raised garden beds, an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, rubber mulch playground and a half-court for basketball and pickleball. “The big standout on this project is the artificial turf accents,” Puckett said. “The pop of color you get with the green really enhances the space.” Photographer: Mirza Kudic

Embracing nature

Gold: Jenny Gardens LLC
For Jenny McCoy, this backyard garden was both a design project and a labor of love. After removing a 1960s concrete pool, she turned the space into a thriving ecosystem that is perfect for relaxing outside and enjoying the beauty of nature. The addition of new native plants and shrubs delighted the homeowners and the neighborhood birds. As McCoy put it, this project “shows homeowners how a garden can be visually stunning without the use of chemicals, all while sustaining biodiversity and wildlife.” Photographer: Jenny McCoy

Exterior Home Makeover

Hi there, neighbor

Before

Gold: ALT Design Studio/Invest DSM/Sequel Architecture
Built in 1908, this historic home in Highland Park needed a top-to-bottom exterior overhaul. The homeowners wanted to retain the home’s original charm, so a new roof and historically accurate windows restored its English cottage vibes. The design team opened up the enclosed front porch and poured new stairs to bring life back to the entryway. A matching detached garage was built next to the property. Photographer: Mirza Kudic
