Design2Build

L-R: Kim Hinkhouse, Business Director; Sheila Waller, Design Director. Photographer: Duane Tinkey.

Q: What made you choose this industry?
A: Sheila: Since the fourth grade I’ve known I wanted to be an Interior Designer. I have always been fascinated by color, furniture and fabric and their endless possibilities. I love the challenge of creating functional and beautifully designed living spaces.
Kim: I went to college for Graphic Design so I have a creative side, however, I have always wanted to build a business and create a place people want to come to work. I love being around design work and improving processes. The journey of a remodel or new build is a rewarding process to be part of!

Q: What is your typical day in the life?
A: Every day is different and fun! We may be meeting a new client for the first time, working in the studio on a design plan, presenting design boards and finishes, or having internal meetings about current projects or processes. We also visit each job site every day to check accuracy and work progress, so there is plenty of variety in our routine!

Q: What makes your company unique?
A: We begin with the end in mind. During our initial discovery appointment, we discuss wants/needs in the space. After design development, we present a proposal of floor plans and mood boards showing finishes, materials and often furniture. We provide clients with detailed visuals to see further down the road into the project versus sitting across the table with only estimates or bids. We determine pricing from the selections made versus allowances.

Q: What is most rewarding about your job?
A: We love delivering to a client a newly transformed space! Giving new life and better function to a tired space where a family will make great memories is special. We love when we can surprise a client with something beyond what they imagined. We’re grateful for their trust in us!
