Myopia, or nearsightedness, affects approximately 42% of people and the numbers are growing, National Institutes of Health reports. Some experts even call myopia an epidemic. And, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, about 33% of all Americans have astigmatism. Both are types of refractive errors with myopia causing blurred distance vision and astigmatism causing lack of clarity at any distance. And while these are two distinct eye conditions, they commonly occur together.

For Iowans who have either or both disorders, glasses and contacts are a necessary part of daily life. Until now. Thanks to Modern Vision Centers, a new provider offering a range of advanced vision correction procedures and its highly trained surgeons—Iowa natives  Drew Dickson, MD, PCEO and Brandon Menke, MD—Iowans can benefit from the latest technology including LASIK and so much more.

“One of the main reasons we started Modern Vision Centers was to bring advanced technology like SMILE to the great people of Iowa.” — Drew Dickson, MD, PCEO

One procedure, SMILE, is the newest form of laser vision correction and even less invasive than LASIK. “SMILE and LASIK both work by reshaping the cornea to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. Rather than having to create a flap [as we do in LASIK], we are able to reshape the cornea through a tiny slit [with SMILE],” Dr. Dickson explains. “This results in fewer post-op restrictions, less of a feeling of dryness, and potentially better stability over time. SMILE patients are seeing well the next day and the overwhelming majority are seeing approximately 20/20 or better within one week.” The   procedure is quick (just a few minutes per eye), performed as an outpatient operation, and is very safe. “The overall rate of any visually significant complication with SMILE is extremely low,” he says. “Follow-up is very straightforward and has the fewest restrictions out of any of the vision correction procedures that we perform.”

The laser that performs SMILE is the Zeiss Visumax femtosecond laser—and Modern Vision Centers is the only provider in Iowa that has one. “I did advanced training for two years to learn how to do SMILE and other vision correction procedures,” Dr. Dickson says. “From what Zeiss has told me, I am the first and only SMILE surgeon in the state. I am excited and honored to be able to bring SMILE to Iowans.”

Curious if you might be a candidate for ditching your glasses and contacts thanks to SMILE or another procedure offered at Modern Vision Centers? The first step is to make an appointment for a consultation and EyeAnalysis exam during which you will experience the center’s patient-first approach as your eye health is examined in detail. And because Modern Vision Centers offers seven advanced vision correction procedures, they can tailor your treatment to your unique needs and lifestyle. “It’s important to find a surgeon who offers all the vision correction options so that together you can make the best decision, specifically for your eyes,” Dr. Dickson says. “We are the only eye doctors in the Des Moines metro who specialize in all seven modern forms of vision correction.”
