Have you noticed that your vision is blurry or hazy? Are there halos around the Christmas lights on the tree and the house? Do the colors of the season seem less vibrant, even faded? Are you nervous about driving home from holiday gatherings after dark because you can’t see as well as you used to? All of these may be symptoms of cataracts—a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that commonly occurs with age. But you can give yourself the gift of better sight—permanently—with the help of Modern Vision Centers’ Brandon Menke, MD, board-certified ophthalmologist and cataract correction expert.
Even more reliable than Santa, Modern Vision Centers’ state-of-the-art laser technology offers same-day cataract treatment for both eyes, enhanced accuracy, and faster recovery for an exceptional patient experience versus traditional cataract removal surgery. “Using a laser also helps make the surgery safer by reducing the trauma to the eye during surgery,” Menke explains. “Think of it like removing concrete; the historical method hacks away at the cloudy lens, while a laser breaks up the lens and allows the surgeon to remove the cloudy lens in small fragments. By reducing the trauma to the eye, we are able to perform the surgery on both eyes the same day. In short, using the laser during cataract removal gives a better visual outcome, is safer, and is easier.”
“When coupling laser cataract surgery with a multifocal lens, most patients can expect to be glasses-free for the rest of their lives,” he says.
During surgery—a pain-free experience—the femtosecond laser makes precise incisions and the clouded natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens to restore clear vision. There are several lens options and the surgeon will suggest what he thinks best fits your goals. “In my opinion, every patient should consider what type of vision they wish they had,” Menke says. “In most cases, patients can achieve incredible vision that can match their individual wishes.” One of the many benefits of laser cataracts removal is never needing corrective glasses or contacts again. “When coupling laser cataract surgery with a multifocal lens, most patients can expect to be glasses-free for the rest of their lives,” he says.
Laser surgery doesn’t involve the trappings of traditional surgery, and the reduced trauma to the eye means a faster, more comfortable recovery time. “There’s no IV, and no need to fast. We give oral Valium and use drops to numb and dilate a patient’s eyes prior to surgery,” he explains. “The day of surgery is made as relaxing as possible with massage chairs for patients before and after surgery, individual pre-op and post-op rooms for patients and their families, and snacks and drinks after the procedure is completed.”
After surgery, most patients’ eyes feel scratchy and their vision may be mildly blurry for a couple days. “However, the vast majority of patients are able to drive the very next day,” Menke says. “The big things we ask are to avoid rubbing their eyes, wear protective goggles—that we provide—while they sleep, and use postoperative drops.” Menke’s personal recommendation for his cataracts patients is to nap for a few hours and have cold, artificial tears at the ready. Many patients describe the outcome as nothing short of a miracle.
Looking to give yourself the gift of a Christmas miracle? Make an appointment for a consultation. “We guarantee the most comprehensive exam with the most thorough testing of any clinic,” he explains. “We look at the inside of the eye, each individual layer of the retina, the cornea, and each patient’s unique astigmatism. We then discuss what we see on their eye tests, what visual outcome is possible from their eyes, and what we would recommend from our experience doing thousands of surgeries.”
