How dedicated fans, top-tier amenities aid in the Iowa Wolves’ development journey

When you step into Casey’s Center to watch the Iowa Wolves, you can expect to watch high-level basketball and the development of some of the NBA’s future stars, right here in Des Moines. Much of this success can be attributed to the city itself, which has proved to be an exceptional environment for nurturing professional talent.

Head Coach Ernest Scott, who just completed his fourth year with the team, has observed Des Moines’ remarkable growth firsthand. He’s consistently impressed by the expanding array of new housing and amenity options. Scott believes it’s an ideal place for players to refine their skills, learn professionalism and deliver exciting performances for dedicated fans.

“It’s a great basketball town, a great minor league town,” Scott said. “The biggest thing in developing these guys is really just teaching them about being professionals. Des Moines is big enough to offer options for players, but they also don’t get too distracted. They can stay on task and learn what they need to succeed at the next level.”

To foster this growth, the Wolves emphasize development both on and off the court. When players aren’t training or competing, they actively engage with the Des Moines community and connect with fans. This includes participating in library and school visits, and enjoying outings at various local venues.

“We’ve got the best fans in the league, no doubt about it,” Scott said. “When you look out at the crowd and see people spending their hard-earned money to watch, it gives you a little boost. That’s what life is like in the NBA. You want to perform for the fans and make sure they don’t leave disappointed.”

Scott cherishes many fond memories of fan interactions over the years. One standout is a recent fan outing at Flix Brewhouse, where supporters brought cakes and thoughtful gifts for the players. He also highlights the unwavering dedication of the fan base at games, even during challenging seasons, recalling more than 7,500 fans packing a home game this past season.

This level of memorable fan support significantly boosts player development and morale.

Randi Burrell, the Iowa Wolves’ Vice President of Operations, also emphasizes the unique fan-player connection that Des Moines and the G League cultivate. Before games, players are frequently seen meeting and chatting with fans. With ample and affordable access to courtside seating, there’s almost no barrier for fans to connect directly with the athletes.

“We’re not just developing players, we’re also developing people,” Burrell said. “And what a great experience when you’re learning how to be a professional to have access and interact with great fans around the community and before and after games. That’s what Des Moines offers.”

The Iowa Wolves tap into the city’s many amenities, leveraging them not just for team bonds and leisure, but as crucial elements supporting a balanced professional life. Favorite restaurants and venues among coaches, players and staff include Bubba, Iowa Taproom, Flix Brewhouse and Smash Park.

For the Iowa Wolves, Des Moines is an active partner in the player development journey. It’s where athletes become professionals, grounded by community, fueled by fan passion, and are supported by a city that’s trending upward.

“In Des Moines, it’s all available to the players,” Burrell said. “Everything’s accessible here.”
