Island Trio

Gold: MainBuilt
Designed for a big young family, this kitchen has its work cut out for it. To maximize its utility, the designers incorporated split islands to ease meal prep, with walnut accents and gold fixtures that add a sense of style. “The custom walnut ‘piano’ island ends are one of the show-stopping features in this kitchen that we can’t get enough of,” said Katelyn Huber, MainBuilt’s marketing manager. “We love how they help to incorporate the other walnut features.” Photographer: Brooke Pavel

A Little Goes a Long Way

Gold (tie): Kimberley Development Corp.
Thanks to the light color palette and modern lighting, this small kitchen in Ankeny feels open and upscale. The pops of color and texture invite guests to pull up a seat at the island, and sleek new appliances practically beg folks to get cooking. An arched window and hints of dark accent fixtures add touches of surprise. “The kitchen design used two-toned cabinets and floating shelves for interest within the space,” said Rylee Hansen, the project’s design coordinator. Simple and Smart

Gold (tie): Dynasty Homes

This West Des Moines kitchen packs a lot of character into a small space. A grand quartz island and elegant lighting fixtures draw the eye, striking a balance between traditional and modern elements. The dark neutral colors accentuate the real centerpiece, the custom range hood with floating storage shelves. “We really needed to make sure the fridge, cabinets and pantry added ample storage space,” designer Laura West said. “We also decided to go with all drawer base cabinets to maximize organization and make sure items are easy to access.” Photographer: Jason Thomas Crocker

Large Kitchen: Modern (201+ sq ft)

Sleek Convenience

Gold: Wild Rose Interiors
Modern meets rustic in this kitchen designed for a country home near Van Meter. The room feels spacious and fresh, thanks to custom inset cabinetry, panel-ready appliances and porcelain countertops. A walk-in pantry adds hidden storage within easy reach. “Modern doesn’t mean all white sterile spaces. Modern can be warm and inviting while still creating a simple, less-is-more space,” said Deb Pudenz, Wild Rose Interiors’ owner and principal designer. She recommends porcelain for countertops, rather than marble, for a similar look with less maintenance. Photographer: Lauren Konrad

Bath

Trendy and Timeless

Gold: Dynasty Homes
Any day is a great day to get ready in this primary bathroom. The space was designed for a new home in Johnston, and the designers wanted it to feel both timeless and on trend. They kept the space stylish with an accent wall. “We felt that it created a great focal point,” said Laura West, one of the designers. The dark cabinets add richness to the space, and multiple textures and finishes add a cozy feel. Photographer: Jason Thomas Crocker
