Have a ball

Here’s an irony for you: Vintage throwbacks are trending on social media. Gen Z has resurrected everything from ’90s baggy jeans to ’70s furniture.

We think the humble cheese ball deserves a Throwback Thursday moment, too. The sturdy staple of the midcentury party table is surprisingly versatile, a perfect candidate for reinvention. Change up the cheese, mix in different herbs, nuts or dried fruit, and roll it in nearly anything you like.

“When making a cheese ball, we recommend using Milton Creamery Quark as a base instead of cream cheese. It’s local, contains no thickeners or preservatives and tastes great,” said CJ Bienert, who owns The Cheese Shop. For a ready-made option, he recommends the cheese balls from Picket Fence Creamery in Woodward, which you can find at Fareway and Hy-Vee. — Hailey Evans
