David McKinney and Kelly Norris eloped last May 1 at Ledges State Park near Luther. “We never planned an exact date and had always said we would elope when the redbuds bloomed, our mutual favorite tree,” Norris says. “But it was such a cold spring that by the last week of April, the redbuds were behind schedule and most of May was out of the question.” McKinney and Norris both work in horticulture, and May is prime planting season.
May Day was “49 degrees and anything but springlike, but we cut redbuds from our hedgerow and took them” as the park’s trees weren’t flowering yet, he adds.
The couple celebrated with family and friends Sept. 10 with a reception at the Brenton Arboretum near Dallas Center.
